One problem (which ultimately speeded the downfall of the theory) was that for many substances the products of combustion were actually heavier than what you started with. (Because of course the oxygen in the air had combined with the original material.)
So Phlogiston was considered to have negative weight - Obviously!

Yes, you're right -- and I find it quite irritating that the article doesn't mention this.
