A Conversation for The Ballista and Trebuchet - Antique Catapults
Onagers and Mangonels

Two basic designs of catapults dating back to Roman times. The Basic design was a frame, on wheels. On this frame was a throwing arm which could hurl large amounts of rocks at a target at decent velocity. This made it good as a siege weapon, and also as an anti-personell device due to the spread of the rocks. The amngonel came first, and was later developed into the Onager, which had a sturdier frame and larger wheels.
