Probably planted in the seventeen hundreds, these red-barked giants can be found scattered throughout Scotland. Easily recognized because they tower twice as tall as other trees, I counted seventeen of these emergents in the woodlands that cover the landward approaches to Little Loch Broom.

Gnomon - time to move on

There's an old country estate in Ireland called Emo Court which has an impressive front drive with two lines of coastal redwoods. I've also seen a couple dotted around gardens in Wicklow.

In other climates, there are several specimens in Sacramento, which is in the Central Valley of California. In fact, there was a neighborhood park full of them just around the corner of where we were living when PaperKid was born. They'd obviously been there awhile, as they were of a respectable diameter, but they *did* look a bit sad and brown, though I likely wouldn't have noticed if I hadn't lived around redwoods in their natural climate for so long.

pity back then they hadn't filled the odd valley or two - they'd have created their own climate by now - they are difficult to climb, the branches liable to pull out of the bark but beloved of tree creepers - I have a cone given by a friend from General Sherman - the largest of them all - I wonder if the seeds are viable?

General Sherman isn't a coastal redwood, though. It's a different type of tree, the giant redwood, which is not as tall.
