Sorry,but it's in Greece

A Horizon programme in Jan 2002 placed Atlantis in Greece i.e. the ancient city of Helike. In 373BC an enormous earthquake hit the city and surrounding area. There is no doubt that Helike sank completely out of sight, not under the sea but an inland lagoon. Over the course of two and a half centuries this dried out, leaving Helike,or Atlantis, buried on land, which explains why it hadn't previusly been found, everyone was looking on various seabeds or under ice.

As I recall, the Horizon programme suggested that Helike *could* be the island on which Atlantis was based. It didn't say that it definitely was. The Horizon series has also done programmes suggesting that Atlantis *could* have been Thera / Santorini. The programmes don't usually say 'This is the way it was' unless there is conclusive proof. As there can never be conclusive proof about Atlantis, I don't think anybody with any sense would say 'This island was Atlantis'.
