A Conversation for Identity Games

Celebrity Head

Sad, Mad or Bad? - I always wanted to be a dino, but alas, I'm just old.

There is a commercial version of the 'Who am I?' called "Celebrity Head" available in Australia, except instead of post-it notes, you wear a headband with the name slotted in it. The game was a feature on an Australian variety show called "Hey Hey it's Saturday" for years, and has since been sold as a board game.

Firstly, I greatly concerned (due to the ethical implications) about any game called 'Celebrity Head'. I cannot possibly manage to believe that this title does not have the same connotations almost worldwide - at least in the English speaking part of the world.

Secondly, I find it amusing to discover an actual show called "Hey, Hey It's Saturday" as this was also the title of an episode of the radio comedy series "Radio Active" concerning an awful Saturday morning children's entertainment programme.

Well, a head is also something that sits on your shoulders, and provides living space for your eyes, nose and mouth smiley - smiley. Since you have to wear a headband with the name in it on your head for this game, I imagine that's the context it's in.

And Hey Hey it's Saturday ran for 28 years in Australia. It was a variety show featuring a regular cast which included musicians, presenters, a pink ostrich, a man-sized duck, a voice-over, and dare I say it? A cap on a stick. Local and visiting celebrities appeared, there were weekly segments featuring competitions, games, and 'Red Faces' (where ordinary Australians had a chance to do their own acts on TV, talent optional). Perhaps you had to see it to really get it, but it was great fun, and an Australian icon for many years.

Re: Celebrity Head. I guess it's just one of those instances of localised branding. No doubt the name would be changed elsewhere to protect the innocent. As it happens, some countries are more innuendo senstive than others (e.g. the English).

Re: Hey, Hey It's Saturday. I shall have to quiz my Australian wife on the matter.

I couldn't find much on the net about it, but I bet your wife will know about it. It was an institution!
