Credit Crunch Christmas
by MinorVogonPoet
Christmas seems to come with festive cheer
And swathes the street with blue and silver lights.
But down the road 'To Let' signs hang and leer,
While shops stand bleakly empty, locked up tight.
Even stores in prime locations in the mall
Tempt shoppers in by boldly cutting prices.
Beer and brandy line supermarkets' walls
Along with biscuits, sweets and luscious ices.
Shoppers fill their trolleys, wait to pay
Ask how much their credit cards can hold.
Here, people queue dejected for advice
On dealing with their debts in ordered ways.
They fight to stop their houses being sold,
And keep their loved ones safe at any price.
