Matt it looks the goods but in places of interest I think Old Melbourne Gaol might be worth a mention with the obvious Ned Kelly connection (an you a Beechworth lad an all
).
Another somewhat morbid fact might be Pentridge Jail and one Mr Ryan the last man hanged in Oz (65?) and as an aside the rather ironically named Harold Holt Memorial Pool ().
I used to love going to that pool and it wasn't till recently I caught the irony of the name.
I just had a quick skim through, but I'll be back tonight to have a proper read.

Had another read and about the only thing I could add would be that in the Otway ranges you can see the worlds tallest flowering plants:
Australia is home to the world’s tallest flowering plant, which are the mountain ash trees found in Victoria and Tasmania. The mountain ash can grow over 110 meters tall and up to 34 meters in girth. Only the giant Redwood trees in California are taller but they are not considered flowering plants since they are conifer trees. Redwood trees also grow much slower than a mountain ash. Redwoods reach their maximum height in 1,200 years while mountain ash can reach their maximum height in as little as 250 years.
Obviously you don't need that much info but they are a terrific thing to see and feel and stand under.
I wonder about the infamous quote: 'the perfect place to make a film about the end of the world'
which was supposed to have been uttered by Ava Gardner on the set of the Movie 'On The Beach' starring her and Gregory Peck (Nevil Shute novel) being filmed in Melbourne.
It entered Melbourne folklore but was later found to be fabricated by a dastardly journo working for the Sydney Morning Herald newspaper.
(Which is just what we Melburnians would of expected from those convicts up in steak+kidney )

What about the racing circuit on Phillip Island?

That's almost more an item for the Victorian entry.
Albert Park circuit is in the entry and that is the home of the ('Melbourne') Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix but for all that the Australian Moto 500 GP is held at the 'Island' and if you want to list more motor sport events then you could mention the Sandown 250: penultimate race on the Australian Touring Car Calendar held of course at Sandown Racetrack.
Winton Motor Raceway - Victoria's premier motor racing venue and home of the V8 Supercars could get a guernsey as well
http://www.wintonmotorraceway.com.au/home/
Calder Park is Melbourne's drag racing track and perhaps Australia's premier (there's that word again) drag racing venue. Just click on this link and wait for it to load and have your ears assaulted by politically incorrect V8's making a hell of a lot of noise...http://www.calderpark.com.au/home.shtml
I think apart from the Albert Park street circuit the others perhaps belong in a State entry but you never know perhaps hootoo is full of revheads who'd like this info

Right, I've added a bit about the Old Gaol, I'm going to leave the other stuff (either for other Entries , or for the revheads to cover at some point, I never got into racing, and wouldn't know where to start and do it justice).

awesome review guys, I have lived in Melbourne all my life it truly is the greatest place on earth, just one thing, I have been to Vlado's in Richmond many times and I can assure you that he is from Croatia not Argentina. Having said that if you have ever tried his steak you will agree that it is out of this world!!!
I defy anyone to claim they know of a better steak house anywhere!
