Ritchie's original name for the SAS was actually the "Special Service", or SS.
This was obviously not a very good name for a unit of British special forces during WW2, so they were soon *renamed* to the "Special Air Service".

There were many units in the British Armed forces with the Title Special Service. Especially SS Brigades. Primarily of the Royal marines. Obvisously they didnt have much of a problem with it.
Either way, It was named the SAS Brigade, as a piece of misinformation to try and convince that the Allies had a large, stragetically mobile infantry force.
Which is correct. Hell the first proper name was L-Detachment. The first Beret was White.
