Nice entry. I think you'd have to say that Haydn was the main driving force behind the string quartet from about 1760-1800. Mozart equalled him in quality (but not quantity) through the 1780s. Haydn's last and perhaps finest quartets date from 1798-1799, the same years as Beethoven's first.

Hmm, yes. Everyone does say that Haydn is the 'Father of the String Quartet'.
In my limited chamber music experience, though, I've never played any Haydn quartets. Though I have played Mozart. But mostly we do baroque stuff arranged for quartet.
