Sounds picky I know, but it was Round the Horne (not Around) and Sid James was already in Hancock's Half Hour on the radio (as indeed was Hattie Jacques)...

I'm not really here

I thought it was that Bernard person that was in most of the Carry On films.

No - Bernard Bresslaw was never in Hancock - you *might* be thinking of Bill Cantrememberhislastname - the Australian bloke who was Hancock's flatmate in the early radio shows.

I thought it was Dick Emery who coined the phrase 'Oh you are awful'
then adds 'but I like you'

It was Bill Kerr in Hancock's Half Hour. He played the dim-witted Australian.

Snide's catch phrase was actually 'Oh, don't be like that.' A typical exchange would run something like this:

(There is a knock at the front door; Hancock answers it)

Snide: Good Evening.

Hancock: What do you want ?

Snide: I'm your next door neighbour.

Hancock: Make the most of it. We're moving tomorrow.

Snide: Oh, don't be like that.

You really need to hear the Snide voice for the dialogue to work. He is the last person you would want living next door.

'You Are Awful' was definitely Dick Emery.

Drool Kenneth Williams was using 'Oooh you are awful' on 'Round the Horne' long before Dick Emery used it, there is somewhere in Ken's diaries a typically scathing comment about Emery using his phrase, quite a diatrite on the word palgarist which is why Emery added the 'But I like you' to his phrase.

Thinking about it, his most famous catch-phrase was actually "Stop messing about!" And that definitely WAS Snide.

I don't remember hearing the character on Round The Horne, though. Gruntfuttock, certainly, but not Snide. Perhaps it was Beyond Our Ken, in the early days. I haven't read his diaries.

My favourite character was Rambling Syd Rumpo, the abysmal folk singer (may your cordwangle always play true!)

Snide was *definitely* used on Round The Horne - usually on the 'action serial' bits...
I like Rambling Sid, but my favourites were probably Julian and Sandy....
