Sounds picky I know, but it was Round the Horne (not Around) and Sid James was already in Hancock's Half Hour on the radio (as indeed was Hattie Jacques)...

I'm not really here Posted Sep 11, 2000
I thought it was that Bernard person that was in most of the Carry On films.

No - Bernard Bresslaw was never in Hancock - you *might* be thinking of Bill Cantrememberhislastname - the Australian bloke who was Hancock's flatmate in the early radio shows.

I thought it was Dick Emery who coined the phrase 'Oh you are awful'
then adds 'but I like you'

It was Bill Kerr in Hancock's Half Hour. He played the dim-witted Australian.
Snide's catch phrase was actually 'Oh, don't be like that.' A typical exchange would run something like this:
(There is a knock at the front door; Hancock answers it)
Snide: Good Evening.
Hancock: What do you want ?
Snide: I'm your next door neighbour.
Hancock: Make the most of it. We're moving tomorrow.
Snide: Oh, don't be like that.
You really need to hear the Snide voice for the dialogue to work. He is the last person you would want living next door.
'You Are Awful' was definitely Dick Emery.

Yep, I'm old enough to remember, and it was definitely Dick Emery.
Well Done DD !!!
Matthew Kershaw Posted Sep 22, 2000
All I wanted to say was well done DD !!!
I might even get around to watching a Carry On film one of these days...
Oh, and reading KW diaries as I've heard the KW Diary tapes and they are 'interesting'...

Drool Kenneth Williams was using 'Oooh you are awful' on 'Round the Horne' long before Dick Emery used it, there is somewhere in Ken's diaries a typically scathing comment about Emery using his phrase, quite a diatrite on the word palgarist which is why Emery added the 'But I like you' to his phrase.
Well Done DD !!!

Thinking about it, his most famous catch-phrase was actually "Stop messing about!" And that definitely WAS Snide.
I don't remember hearing the character on Round The Horne, though. Gruntfuttock, certainly, but not Snide. Perhaps it was Beyond Our Ken, in the early days. I haven't read his diaries.
My favourite character was Rambling Syd Rumpo, the abysmal folk singer (may your cordwangle always play true!)
Well Done DD !!!
Stealth Munchkin Posted Sep 25, 2000
Snide was *definitely* used on Round The Horne - usually on the 'action serial' bits...
I like Rambling Sid, but my favourites were probably Julian and Sandy....
Well Done DD !!!

He was very good as Evil Edna in the children's programme I can't remember the name of , though it might have been Will'o the Wisp?
Well Done DD !!!
Stealth Munchkin Posted Sep 26, 2000
Yeah, it was Will O'The Wisp - in fact he did all the voices for that...
Well Done DD !!!
Drool Frood the Second Posted Sep 27, 2000
You learn somethng new everyday.I didn't know that KW was using oh you are awful before Dick Emery, however I cannot recall him using that precise phrase on Round the Horn.
As for Will o the Wisp yep he did all the voices for that as far as I know.
