if your workplace/apartment block/whatever has recycle bins and so on, actually check that they do recycle it
i know that the university i used to study at had umpteen recycling bins (for paper, so already of dubious value) but did not in fact have a recycling scheme
and mcDs pretended for years that they had a recycling scheme when in fact they did not

very true! I worked has a garbage/maintenance man for a private community. The recycling was actually taken care of by an outside company. The company would send a truck to pick up the recycling, which we had sorted into bins within a large dumpster. One day my boss decided to follow the truck, and was able to watch as they removed the separating walls of the dumpster, and then emptied all the contents together into a regular garbage truck with all the other garbage they'd collected that day! Talk about a waste of time & money, especially since we were paying them extra for the recycling service!
