As I learned it in school (and I also have a book here with the legend in it) the Prince left Gellert in the nursery to guard his baby son while he was out hunting. When he returned the nursery was in a hell of a state and Gellert, as you say, had blood over his mouth. The Prince was so angry that he killed Gellert there and then but a moment later he heard his son crying, he was in fact safe and sound under the upturned crib. The Prince then found the corpse of the wolf behind the nursery curtains.

I don't remember anything about the son being lost...

The important thing about the guide is that where it is inaccurate it is at least definitively inaccurate....
