I haven't heard that he started out by being had up for poaching. Since the whole story is a romance, anyway, I prefer the romantic variation that Robert of Locksley was unfairly stripped of his title because he stood up for the Anglo-Saxons against the Normans.
Also, hadn't heard of them burning the castle the night before the hanging. Again, the more romantic version has them rescuing him in the nick of time.

There's also a variation that puts him in Lincolnshire, where there are several other folk things to do with hoods. But I think that was probably because the stuff the outlaws' clothes were made of is known as "Lincoln green"
