I'm not sure whether Roy and HG coined the phrase "squirrel grip", but they certainly use it a lot. Which begs the question; where did it originate?

No idea on where it originated, but I first heard it used by Roy & HG during their wrestling commentry for the 2000 Olympics.
Hope that helps a little bit.

Rampaging Roy and H.G. Nelson did coin the phrase 'Squirrel Grip'. Before the 2000 Olympics, they for many years provided alternative commnentary for state of origin series (QLD Vs NSW) in australian rugby league on Triple JJJ radio.some have been uploaded on YouTube. The squirrel grip for radio fans was describing a player griping the crotch of another player in a tackle. Also done in wrestling.
