"The collection of all the whole numbers . . . "
I had always thought that "whole numbers" included positive integers and zero only.
You could just lop off the front of the sentence, and say that "the counting numbers, zero, and negative numbers are collectively known as 'integers'" -- except that "negative numbers" really should be "negative integers," and then you're using the term to define itself. Presumably you can find a better wording than mine.
