What a fascinating entry!
I don't know it you've read "Twinkle, Twinkle, Killer Kane' by William Peter Blatty (of 'Exorcist' fame). The film was called 'The Ninth Configuration'.
There's a character in it, confined to a mental hospital, who keeps hitting the wall with a hammer to 'punish' the atoms for not moving out of his way.
Apparently, he just wasn't persistent enough.
