A Conversation for Langton's Ant

I've just been having a play with the Langton's Ant computer program, watching the ant go from chaotic patterns to the highway. If I change a few squares of the original white grid to be black, the ant still eventually builds its highway. Do you know if it always does this, regardless of what the original grid pattern is?

That's a big question. So far all the ants people have watched eventually show emergent behaviour unless the rules are set in such a way that the ant can't move or is unreasonably constrained in her movements. However, we can't say that *all* ants will *always* show this behaviour because we can't watch them all.

I love this entry. I love Langton's ant and everything it represents. It's a very beautiful example of chaos and mathematical theory.
