Several A/K/A Random's 'sporting blues'
Oh hi! I've only blown past deadline again after watching various sports the past weekend on the Sub-Ethereal Communication devices... but, comma, however, I have failed to record any details of said AmSports I purportedly viewed, read about, or saw replays of.I do have a question, though:
When you watch tennis on teevee, does your head still go back-and-forth like it does when you're really there?
And before I go any further, I must make note that I saw the teevee commercial for the 29 April selected nationwide debut of a certain movie that this website is based on. (One thing for sure, I ain't driving an hour there and an hour home.) Personally, I don't watch movies all that much, but methinks I shall see the Hitchhiker's Guide movie more than once, as feasible (affordable).
Should be another interesting AmSport weekend with baseball beginning and pro basketball heading into the playoffs. I'm sure there's a golf tournament somewhere and somebody will be playing ping-pong tennis, supercharged autos will be going roundy-roundy... but the biggest teevee event of this weekend is the AmFoot college draft...
This is the place where teams select college football players for their franchises, and must pay them zillions of $$$$$ up front, and each one of the players has already spent nearly 70% of his 'guaranteed' money before the ink is dry on the contract.
In other AmSport news, the Boston Marathon is getting ready; the Tour-De-Lance thinks it's stashed enough endorsement money away and is probably negotiating book and movie rights and the next level of endorsement madness; King George Steinbrenner, owner of the Noo Yawk Yankers, is again mouthing off because the extremely overpaid ballplayers HE signed to ridiculous guaranteed contracts haven't won the pennant yet.
Or something.
Meanwhile, in my nation's capitol, the DC of Washington, baseball is being played in an AmFoot stadium... this is notable because the original Washington Senator franchise from the 1910's packed up and moved to Minnesota, the second Senators franchise became The Texas Rangers, and this third attempt at pro baseball in DC is the franchise that's been playing 'home' games in San Juan and Montreal for two seasons1.
So yep, the AmSport media will be going bezonkers this weekend, and did I tell you about the Hootoo movie 29 April?
As always, most all comments will be replied to, if not answered... and I'm just getting news of a huge teevee AmFoot shift for zillions of $$$$... other breaking news... two fans suspended from attending games in Yanker Stadium... what, the Boston Marathon was TODAY????? Nagdannit, I'm a week late, I'm way over deadline...
... so I'm several. a/k/a random, here on a Sub-Ethereal communication device, struggling to stay in communication, and right here is when I'm OVER AND OUT (WHAT?!?! we're OUT of Pan-Galactic Gargle Blasters!!!!!????? Oh help...)
Elsewhere, in a Small Place Called Europe
Northampton had a very lucky escape on Friday in the Zurich Premiership as World Cup hero, Jonny Wilkinson, missed a penalty in the dying minutes of the game giving the Saints a 1 point victory over Newcastle. With several matches postponed over the weekend the actual league standings are muddied but, whatever the outcome, Saints really have to win against Worcester on 30th April or they will almost certainly be relegated.
Balls of a Different Shape
The disruptive element of Inter Milan fans last week cost the club a £132,000 fine and AC Milan were awarded the match with a 5-0 aggregate win. This means that AC go on to play the Dutch side PSV on 26th April. PSV are riding high as they lead the Dutch First Division table by 14 points with Ajax and AZ tussling for second place. Further news for Dutch football fans is the resignation of Dick Advocaat as coach of Borussia Monchengladbach. He led the Dutch National Team at Euro 2004 and has also been the boss of Glasgow Rangers.
27th April sees the clash of the English clubs in the Champions League as Chelsea meet Liverpool. I guess that I will, once more, have the tv on in the background while editing The Post.
Yet More Balls of a Different Shape
Saturday saw the start of the World Snooker Championships at The Crucible in Sheffield. I always groan when I see the BBC schedule disrupted to make way for endless hours of snooker but, invariably, get suckered into watching and find myself enjoying it all immensely. Many fans of the game were saddened to hear that Paul Hunter is suffering from cancer. He put on a brave show but was knocked out by Michael Holt so will take no further part.
All the familiar faces are back again. Steve Davies played an epic game to beat Northern Ireland's Gerard Greene in the final frame. Steven Hendry cruised to a convincing win and Jimmy White gave us all the usual heart attack by opening up a big lead only to see it narrowed down in the second session. I think the world and his dog would like to see little Jimmy actually win the competition this time around!
The big news of the tournament, however, is the scintillating 147 potted by Mark Williams in just nine minutes. The valleys must be celebrating as Williams is the first Welshman to complete this feat at The Crucible and only the fifth player to do so in the Championship. Play was suspended on the other table as all eyes watched a masterclass of red/black/all the colours play.
Finally
London braced itself on Sunday as record numbers of people ranging from determined athletes to OAPs lined up for the 25th London Marathon. Silly costumes abounded, as always, and a staggering 35,105 crossed the finishing line.
Leading the men home was Martin Lel of Kenya beating a strong international team. Britain Jon Brown finished a creditable sixth while pre-race favourite, Paul Tergat, was eighth. The biggest cheer of the day was reserved for Paula Radcliffe, however, as she cruised home in the ladies race. She was caught short by a call of nature at the twenty two mile mark but 'did the business' and carried on to clock a new record time of 2 hours 17 minutes 42 seconds. Well done Paula!
