I fail to understand what the point of this was, when we have no evidence of alien civilisations never mind their motives, other than to gain attention. Has he got a new book to sell?

I can't believe you've just cast such a slur on our National Treasure! 
This man has brought cosmology to the masses. Oh, and he once appeared in the Simpsons, too.
