Spread the jam in the bottom of a pyrex dish. Pour or spoon the cake mixture on top and cook as before.Serve with custard or cream or whatever. Not as stodgy as a proper jam pudding and a bit quicker to cook.

Favourite as a child 
Place pastry base into each spot in a small bun tray, add some jam, cover with the cake mix and bake.

I'm surprised I missed that, especially since I felt obligated to mention the electric to mix the cake batter.
