It seems as nobody has yet mentioned the Bunyip.
This creature has been the demise of many unwary travelers who have frequented Australia's billabongs & other waterways.

yeah, one got a tourist back home last year... the Murray river is not the safest place to swim... two guys paddling a canoe, it capsizes, they fall out. Guy number one walks across to the bank with his friend just behind him... he fell down a hole... they found his body 2 days later 
when it rose to the surface...
