A Conversation for Traditional Children's Songs - UK
by-gone Songs for Children

I have for two or three years at the request of my oldest son(28) been trying to find the words and source of a song my mother (died this day last year at 83 years old) used to sing. I asked her and she thought it might have been called On Bracken Hill. The only words I remember are as follows:
"One night as I walked slowly home, I heard a quier and wonderous sound, and I stood still. Then through the bracken one by one came goblins brown, singing as they marched along to goblin town. We can fashion rings of gold, mend a necklace worn and old, make a magic fairy crown, in the depths of goblin town."
The above is all I remember and is likely to be inaccurate too.
Does anybody else remember any of the above????????

Hi flyforher, welcome to h2g2
I've posted a link to your query here -
F19585?thread=7156974
It may get more response in <./>Askh2g2</.> than on the children's song page. Hope you manage to come back to see if there's any replies, either here, or in the other thread.

These are the words I remember my father singing.
One night as I walked slowly home through Bracken Hill.
I heard a queer and wanderous sound
and I stood still.
And through the bracken one by one came goblins brown.
singing as they marched along to Goblin "Town
"Back to Goblin Town we go, hidden in the depths below
We have work that must be done
Ere the rising of the sun.
We can fashion rings of gold
Make a necklace worn and old.
We can make a fairy crown
In the depths of Goblin Town.
Hope this is of some use
