I fear you have missed the best of advice for somebody wanting to avoid compuer viruses. Toss out your PC and get a Mac. Macs are naturally immune to most PC viruses and generally a healthier species though they are suceptible to a few viruses.

I tried to stress, a bit subtly, that using the most popular versions of anything are your worst bets. But, since Dubya shows every indication of becoming president, and he shows every indication of being in favor of monopolies, I suppose we'll all be screwed by Microshaft for at least the next 4 years. Since I like to play computer games, and all the good titles run optimally on an M$ machine, I have to do what I can.
