One thing that you don't suggest in your article is the use of virus checker programs. There are a number of these about and some will even check .vbs files and Word and Excel files. All you need to do is save the attachment (which carries no risk in itself) and run the checker. O.K., there may be a fee for continued use, but this does allow you to get protection from the latest viruses, often by downloading the upgrade from the Web. (If you don't have Web access, how are you reading this?)
Virus checkers have the advantage of allowing you to check for viruses in any new software, not just stuff from the web. I found a virus this way on a floppy a friend gave me. He didn't even know the virus was there!

There is at least one virus-checker that is free for personal use, and I have been told from Network Administrators of large and very sensitive networks that it is considered good and up to date.
You can choose an interval for updating automatically or you do it manually, the effect is the same, you have a free, good and reliable virus-checker at all times.
Still, the advice in this article are very good, always consider carefully before opening attatchments

Virus checkers are a useful tool, but this article is geared towards avoidance of the big virus scares, which are always new viruses, and thus not yet introduced to the virus checker's database. Virus checkers are a good contraceptive, but there is no better prevention method than abstinence, or, failing that, careful selection of data-exchange partners.

Couldn't agree more!
Now we just have to work on avoiding the virus-warning hoaxes and chain-letters.
Hmm, let's see what the guide can come up with here
