Breaking rocks to break rocks to extract gold?

Has anyone ever heard of a gold extraction process in which you break rocks with a sledge hammer or jackhammer to take the resulting broken rocks and use these to break gold bearing rock? Why not just use the sledge hammer or jack on the gold bearing rock? Someone told me that's what they were doing with rocks on my property, breaking them to use to break other rocks. Does anyone think that he might instead be breaking my rocks to extract the gold in these. Appreciate an answer.
