Well obviously it depends on the demographic of the hosts of the party. Students, young people and newly weds for example can not always afford to buy lashings of drink.

It also depends on the size of the party. A party for 8 is easily catered for a party that takes over the whole house is a different matter entirely.

Well, we've been all of those things, plus unemployed, etc and the parties are usually pretty big. I suppose we just share. Mi casa, su casa and all that!
