Sir Clough? Surely not!
Ridiculous news of the week: Apparently a group of petitioners have delivered their signatures to Downing Street, demanding that Brian Clough be awarded a posthumous knighthood. Now Blair may be good at bowing (bending over, I call it) to public opinion, but surely he can't allow this to go ahead. No disrespect to the dead, but KBEs are supposed to be awarded to those members of the British Empire who are fine upstanding delegates. Cloughy, fine manager that he was, was frequently bigoted, racist, sexist, homophobic and generally downright rude. This is surely not what constituents a 'Sir', is it?
As one goes, another comes back. 22 months after being dismissed by Chelsea for inserting various substances into his nose, Mark Bosnich is considering a comeback. A shame - now Adrian Mutu won't have anyone to share his gear with...
I was impressed this week by news from several's side of the pond, where Vijay Singh has become the first golfer ever to earn $10m in a season. Admittedly, prize funds have become engorged somewhat in recent years, but Singh's form this season has been electrifying and I for one couldn't be happier for him - Fiji doesn't exactly have a golf tradition.
Meantime, I bet every football fan wishes they were at Bloomfield Road between 9:30 and 10pm on Tuesday night. Blackpool were 2-2 with Huddersfield after 90 minutes. Then, after playing a dull half-hour of dour, defensive extra-time, they won 6-3. Shame it was only the LDV Vans really.
Lastly, the BBC Football website is running a competition for you to win a pair of tickets to watch Southampton against West Brom. Anyone interested? Anyone? You sure? Please? Go on...
Double lastly, I've just read my opening paragraph, and tried to word out how Alex Ferguson got a 'Sir'....
Dammit...this column could do with some controversy every now and then - that's what the Post is for, isn't it1?
