This is a building designed to impress foreign potentates! As they sweep up to the stately gates in their Daimler/Carriage they are forced to look in awe as the drive sweeps up through 1 mile of glorious Belfast parkland.
Of course all great buildings adapt to their era and usage over time, these days it serves another purpose. It's straight so it tricks tourists into thinking its a short walk, little do they realise until they're half way that it's a marathon hike up a mountain that'll get em if they carry on forwards or decide to give up and go back.
Buildings have more sense than architects do.
