Wow! You make it sound so scary! But I do see what you're saying, a little common sense goes a long way
My wife, oldest son(10), and I were just certified a few months back and have had a great time with it- My wife and I have even gone so far as to go on a shark dive in the Bahamas- WOW! 60-70 sharks at 80' on a wall dive, we just kinda swam along with them. Then we watched the divemaster feed them(Don't try this at home kids, he had special training and some of that nifty "chain-mail" gear) It was amazing!
SCUBA diving is cool!

Yeah, it's always been a saying of mine that: "If it can't kill you, it ain't worth doing!" 
Still, scuba is a sport that should be reserved for those with uncommon wisdom (often mistakenly called "common sense" ).
