The presence of Arsenal in the top division in the first place was the result of some dubious dealing in the 1930's when, before playoffs, they finished fifth and then, miraculously, leapfrogged into the then first division. Hand of God?
and, no I am not a Spurs supporter.
to clarify.

sorry to point this out, but, although there was some dodgy dealing, it wasn't in the 1930's.
once the first world war had broken out, football sort of stopped for a while. once it had ended, the league resumed in 1919, with the league being expanded from 20 teams to 22 teams. arsenal had finished fifth in the old old second division, and the arsenal chairman persuaded the other league commity members to let arsenal in the league. yes, the arsenal chairman talked arsenal into the top-flight, and they have been there ever since. but if they didn't deserve to be in the league, then how did they stay in it for so long?
