The GPL does allow you to use GPL libraries with commercial software. It has to, or all commercial Linux software would have to be statically linked to a proprietary C library (at the very least, probably to a set of X libraries as well) which is not the way to encourage functionality or quantity or cheapness.

The core of the qnx os makes no use of GPL libraries (This may not be true of the X server but Xfree 86 isn't copyleft is it?)
However most of the tools and programs that ship with it are GPL'ed and the source to them is freely available at http://www.qnx.com/cgi-bin/dir_find.cgi?/usr/free/
It also says this about LGPL libraries in the terms: "We only dynamically link to such libraries. We do not authorize you to statically link any part of the Realtime Platform to any GNU Libraries or any other code licensed under the GNU LGPL. "

It has to be said that I would pay for Linux, I paid for Microlard Windows, and that is nowhere near as stable.
I have to confess that I'm a bit for a Linux fan (and am lucky enough to have a seperate machine with it on permanently). For anyone with a resonable technical knowhow, I would definitly recommend giving it a try.

Have a look at:
http://walbran.org/sean/linux/linmodem-howto.html
Seems there are a few software modems you might get working.
Haven't tried any of them myself though - I have a nice permanent LAN connection at university

I have a reasonable LAN connection at University. Shame about the firewall. However, at home I have dial-up.

On a windows machine you can use http-tunnel.com to bypass the firewall .
Linux has an equivalent, unfortunately I don't know of any servers to use the linux version on
