Sodium benzoate (E211) is used as a preservative (antibiotic) in soft drinks. Recently manufacturers have been incorporating extra vitamin C into soft drinks as a selling point, and there is evidence that this can react with sodium benzoate to form benzene - a potent carcinogen.
