It would actually be useful to note that, while karate has old origons, what we generally call Karate now originated with funkoshi and few master from the late 1800's. Shotokan, Shito-ryu, Wado-ryu, and Gojo-ryu (as differentiated from Okinawan Gojo-ryu) are what we know as the four traditional style of 'Japanese' Karate. Okinawan Karate is slowly disapearing being absorbed into the newer styles, as far as I have heard there are no practioners left of the family styles, Naha-te, Shuri-te, toma-te, etc left.
Each of the 'traditional' styles has splintered over the years. Each splinter group making minor modification to the origonal that end up giving it a subtly unique flair.
