When you get to Fishbourne and you're stopped by the man who checks you in, note whether he has a clip-board in his hand. If not, when he asks you what ferry you're booked on, just say the time of the next ferry and you should be alright. They only check when they have the clip-board!

and the same goes for the Portsmouth end as well!

I'll have to remember that!
Normally, though, I'm just a foot passenger, and so never have any trouble getting on. But if I ever get a car and learn to drive, I'll use that tip.
