The reaction to his speech was pretty poor as I recall. Some windbag spoke for like two hours about the battle and stuff and the press loved his speech.
Lincoln's was not critically acclaimed at the time he gave it. But it was later recognized for its simplicity and beauty.
I'll try to get details on this and report back tomorrow!
