Reuse, Renew, Recycle
Try your hand at repairing things to get as much life as possible out of them.
If you have a garden build a compost heap. save all your kitchen waste and compost it along with the garden waste. Shredded cardboard and straw and lime will keep it sweet.
Try and recycle everything you can - and I mean everything! Search the internet for companies that take electronic equipment and other things that you can't recycle locally. If your local authority does not offer kerbside recycling pester them constantly and get all your neighbours to do so as well.

Check our Freecycle to keep stuff out of land fill http://www.freecycle.org/ . There is always someone who will want what you don't.
