enjoyed this entry immensely.

shelby foote, the historian/novelist featured so prominently in ken burns 'the civil war' had imho the most beautiful accent and voice i have ever heard.

there is magic in these accents and i am glad you made such excellent use of literary references. kudos to you.

Excellent! smiley - applause

I heard an actual hillbilly from Front Royal, Virginia who it required a great deal of concentration and effort to understand on account of his victorian speech coupled with what northerners call a 'mushmouth'. His favorite expletive was 'Bedads!' And another favorite phrase used when explaining how disagreements were settled was 'fo-th-law' by which he meant 'before the law' which was when there was actually no law - no police, no sheriffs, no magistrates - no law. Except for a circuit judge that showed up once a year - but nobody waited for that, apparently.

My other two favorite Southernisms are 'Fo-lane' for four land road, and chimbley, for chimney.

Thanks for your fine work smiley - ok
