Bouldering (in pretty much its purest form) has been practiced for over 100 years in the forest of Fontainbleau near Paris, France. Many of the world's hardest boulder problems can be found there. Bouldering was definitely taking place at Almscliff (Yorkshire, UK) - as well as at many other UK outcrops - in the early 20th Century.
Not that John Gill wasn't a fantastic climber though.
