Although goldfish are linked in most peoples' minds with bowls, tanks are much better. If you're wondering why, look at a golfish bowl. See the (relatively) narrow opening? Oxygen enters the water at the surface, and a rectangular tank has a greater surface area. Bowls are cheaper, though...

If you *must* have a bowl for that decorative look, only fill it up to its widest point - this ensures maximum surface area for gaseous exchange. There are modern wide-topped bowls for this purpose, but they aren't half as pretty.

You're right, a fish tank is better than a bowl, since it provides more surface area for aeration. i'm new to the goldfish thing, i got my first tank with four goldfish yesterday, but have been reading about them. They're very cute little creatures and a delight to watch.
