The land company that named Birmingham, Alabama (The Elyton Land Co.)was not FROM Birmingham, UK, but did name the new city FOR the English industrial city as part of the marketing plan that was required to attract capital and laborers to Jones Valley to realize the value of it's natural resources.

And if bauxite is indeed prevalent in the area, I have never heard of it being commercially extracted here. By far the principal mineral resources in the area were iron ore, coal, and limestone, which, although not always of the highest quality, were found in unusual proximity requiring a minimum of transportation to bring them together for the making of steel.
