in ordinary films we usually prepare ourselves for a fright but hitchcock never gives us any time to get ready we are caught unawares

While it's true Hitchcock did use shock and surprise, he also built up with suspense. He would often let us know that something bad was going to happen, then make us squirm waiting for it.

Aye - Hitchcock himself was quoted as saying;
"There is no terror in the bang, only in the anticipation of it."
