The Ampelmännchen survived and are doing well. In fact, in some cities (take Dresden, for example) the Amplemännchen has gotten female company. Some traffic lights now display a standing/walking woman. Quite cute, actually.

I was in Bilbao over the half-term and they have distinctive green crossing men too! Standardisation can go too far, you know.
