The entry states:
'All through the 1960s, there seemed to be two main groups vying with each other for chart success,...'
While this is generally true, it should be remembered that this was somewhat specific to the UK. In 1967, a group that was formed to emulate the Beatles success outsold the Beatles and Rolling Stones combined (in the USA). They were [drumroll] The Monkees.
That was an interesting headline!
