The average half life of most "heavy" elements is in the thousands of years range.
We have helicopters these days.
We have portable radiation detectors.
We have lots of students writing thesis (thesi?) on astronomy, geology, physics, etc.
Why not match up some of the students with some of the equipment and send them off to Tunguska to try and detect Radiation.
Should be simple to get an answer.
