A Conversation for How to Cope with Culture Shock
I never realised

When I moved to New Zealand from Australia three years ago, I was really excited. I remained excited and optimistic for the first few weeks, until I ended up living in a really bad neighbourhood, in a (literally) freezing house for three months. For the next three years I hated the place. I hated the ads, the people, the accent, the shops, the attitude ... I've finally accepted it, and I've even started liking the place, and making friends. And of course, pretty much as soon as I started to like it here, I'm moving back. Really not looking forward to reverse culture shock.
I wish I'd read this a few years ago. I honestly didn't realise that culture shock worked that way. Maybe I'll be more prepared for reverse culture shock, should it happen, thanks to this entry. And also, Oz is a lot better than NZ in a lot of ways I'm sure the better pay, cheaper goods, better tax and better weather will help soften the blow
