Sonnet: To Ice Cream
How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.
I love thee to the depth and breadth and height
My hands can reach, when groping out of sight
In the freezer on hot summer days.
As thy cold sweetness lingers on my lips,
So thou doest take up residence on my hips.
Yet still I seek thee to break my fast,
As mid-day treat and late-night repast.
I love thee in all thy many guises:
Wrapped in a cone or ice cream cake,
Splashed with liqueur or in a milkshake.
I love all flavours that man devises.
With ice cream I'll face all worldly care -
Who needs Heaven? I'm already there.
(With apologies to Elizabeth Barrett Browning, who is no doubt used to these things
by now.)
