I always enjoy visiting San Francisco, because of sites like Lombard plus the fact that you can get around without a car.
In both senses this is like London, and unlike virtually all other cities, at least in the US. A continuation of my rant here:

you do well to mention that this is not the crookedest street in sf: vermont st. in the industrial area east of the james lick freeway has that honor. i think it has more than 8 curves; in any case these are so tight, and the street so narrow, that if you don't hit them just right, you end up manoeuvering in reverse to get through.
the street is one way now, but was not always. the winding path it takes was not only designed for safe descent, it also allowed horse-drawn vehicles to get UP the street.

I'm not sure how one measures crookedness, but Lombard Street is a better sight than the other streets that claim the honor... at least from what I've seen.
