A trip down memory lane...

I had the pleasure of visiting there a couple of times, both on business. I had such an amazingly good time there that, the second time, when I found myself in Sydney (a festering pustule of a city, if you ask me), I boarded the train and skipped off to Newcastle for a couple of days.
Too right about the number of pubs, too. I couldn't believe how many there were in such a small area, concentrated in the Hunter Street area. Not only that, but apparently, there aren't any laws regarding how late the bars can be open, because, with the guidance of a local girl, I was able to party on until 6:00 am one fine morning. Probably could have caroused for a bit longer, too, but I had to go to work.

Being a local, I'll agree with you on the number of pubs which are littered around the place. I grew up in the suburb of Wallsend which has got a high concentration of pubs. I returned there the other day to find there is now a 'pub' inside the shopping centre there! - I hear they had to bypass the local government and get the State to move in to authorise it (against the wishes of the locals...) ... complete with poker machines and beer! hurrah!
But anyway onto the main reason why I am posting, in regard to this earling morning pubbing/clubbing - It is possible to keep going in Newcastle into the wee hours of the morning - but nowadays it seems that only one select pub that I know of seems to run after 5am - and I am not sure of the legality of that either! There used to be events at places designed specifically for a early Saturday/Sunday morning party after the major dance club(s) shut (The Mercury usually) - but this seems to have ceased - many think the council *has* stepped in and acted like Big Dog and Miss Kim and telling us it's time to get to bed ... or some rubbish like that...
So if you are up for a full night and morning of partying my advice is to go to Sydney - where u can keep clubbing till your heart's desire... However if you are after some drinks and pool ... the places open in the wee hours of the morning in Newcastle would probably keep you satisfied
Cheers.

Yes Newcastle is known for its pubs. Myself a former student of Newcastle Uni (currently the largest employer in Newcastle as legend has it) was familiar (but never awarded with) the 'Bachelor of Inebriation'. This assignment required its' attendees to leg it down Hunter street, stopping at each pub along the way and sculling a drink (pints for boys & halfs for girls). One graduated with honours if one did not make a pit stop...
and oh for the Newcastle mating call - a heavy dopler effect of 'show us yah t......iiii .tt.. t..s ... s ......s' as a vehicle coughed up fumes in a romantic burn off (?)
All quality.
