I enjoyed reading this entry.
Under 'What's not a blackbird' include the chough - crow fauily, black plumage, yellow, but downward curving beak. Where I live (which is not coastal) there's a pub called The Chough' ans 2 of the schools feature choughs on there badges, so there must nbe a connection. I think I once knew but have now forgotten.BIGAL

Interesting entry
Can the blob be amended? It clearly isn't illustrating the blackbird of the entry, as it has no yellow beak.

It looks a bit like a female blackbird, but more like a Song Thrush.

fair enough. nevertheless 'blackbirds' aren't named for the plumage of the female.

Yes, I'm disappointed too. There are numerous references in the entry to the beautiful black and yellow markings of the male blackbird, the colours that give the bird its name, and to poems written over the centuries about these, and the fact that the female has non-descript brown plumage to blend into the background. I would have thought a picture of a male blackbird would be much more appropriate.

Sorry, Dr Anthea! I'm sure you put a lot of work into that picture, and it is a very good picture. It's just not what I was expecting, that's all. Please don't hang up your paintbrush!

yep, thanks DrA for putting in the effort to give this a blob - h2g2 would be a duller place without the community artists, but also, being what it is, you can't throw a brick without hitting a critic
