This is a wonderful entry, most informative and very evocative. Thank you for all this information! It is very sad what has happened to the bison herds, it would have been wonderful to see hundreds of thousands of them thundering over the earth..

I'm hoping that the present BSE stupidity at the American border will add impetus to the return of the bison. They are making a comeback as a ranched animal (much more environmentally sensible in this part of the world since cattle evolved in Eurasian river valleys and bison evolved right here on the arid North American plains). Pretty much the only red meat I eat is bison. It's now pretty much readily available around here.

I should mention that Head-Smashed-In is one of my favourite places on the planet (along with Palenque and Cumae). But this past summer I came across another contender: Dry Island Buffalo Jump. I'm working on an entry.

Bison are ranched? What a great idea...

I look forward to that entry.

Here's a neat link: http://www.albertabuffalotrail.org/breeders.html

This is the site for the bison ranchers and breeders in a small part of Alberta. Interestingly, Dry Island Buffalo Jump is pretty much smack dab in the middle of the map.

There's also a wacky hybrid thing they call a Beefalo. It's still around, but I sure don't see the meat much. http://www.beefalobeef.com/

Beefalo - what a concept! They look quite 'cute'...

Thanks for the links.
